Watercolor Flamingos

This is one of the cards we did in my Club Classes this month focusing on watercoloring.  We scribbled the Tempting Turquoise Watercolor Wonder Crayon on an oval punched out of Watercolor Paper and then blended it with an Aqua Painter.  We then wet the flamingo stamp with a clean Aqua Painter and colored directly onto the stamp with the Melon Mambo Watercolor Wonder Crayon before stamping it on the damp oval.

Four Frames Cards

Sorry I haven't posted for a few days, it's been hectic!  My younger son returned from his trip to Greece with the Honors College students at his university so we had to spend what time we could with him before he went back to school when his Spring Break ended.  He had a great time and took some fantastic pictures!  My older son is now home on his Spring Break.  I also went to a Diva Day at my upline's, held my Club Classes, and have been getting ready for other events this week!

One of the events I've been prepping for is a get-together at my house tonight for some of my downline and sideline Demonstrator friends who live nearby.  We try to get together once a month to share ideas, talk about our businesses, and, of course, do a little stamping!

Weekly Inspiration

Today's card uses a beautiful technique that Stampin' Up! recently featured in the Stampin' Success magazine that all Demonstrators get each month.  This magazine is filled with business building tips and stamping techniques and ideas.  A recent article taught the "faux mother-of-pearl" technique which I used on this card.  It's hard to see the beautiful shimmer of the faux mother-of-pearl on the main image in the scan, but it is there and is truly lovely in person.  Give this technique a try yourself and you'll see!

Directions

1)  Cut a piece of Whisper White Card Stock to 2 1/8 x 4 3/4".

2)  Pour one or two small drops of Frost White Shimmer Paint onto a non-porous surface.  I used half of a Small Flat Cellophane Bag (page 170, $3.95).

3)  Crumple a piece of plastic into a tight ball.  The more crumples the better.  I used the other half of the Small Flat Cellophane Bag.

4)  Dip the crumpled plastic into the Shimmer Paint and then dab off some of the excess onto the non-porous surface.

5)  Pounce the crumpled plastic around on the white rectangle.  Get more Shimmer Paint on the plastic as needed.  Cover the entire white rectangle randomly with the pounced on Shimmer Paint.  Leave some spaces uncovered though.  Set the card stock aside to dry for a few minutes.

6)  While your white card stock dries, cut a piece of Always Artichoke Card Stock to 2 1/2 x 4 7/8".

7)  Punch one long side of the artichoke rectangle with the Scallop Trim Border Punch.

8)  Cut a piece of Pink Pirouette Card Stock to 4 x 5 1/4".

9)  Lay the punched artichoke rectangle on the left side of the pink rectangle without adhering it.

10)  Stamp the sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes in Always Artichoke Ink to the right of the artichoke rectangle and about 1 1/4" up from the bottom.

11)  If your white rectangle is dry, get some Baja Breeze Ink on a piece of sponge and rub it onto the white rectangle.  Reink your sponge as needed until the entire piece is dyed blue.

12)  Use the tissue or paper towel to wipe excess ink off the rectangle.  Wherever the Shimmer Paint is the ink will be resisted.

13)  Stamp the open stalk of flowers image from the Fast & Fabulous Set onto the faux mother-of-pearl rectangle two times using the StazOn Ink.

14)  Allow the stamped images to dry for a few moments.

15)  Use the brush tip of the Pink Pirouette Marker to color in the petals of the flowers.

16)  Use the fine tip of the Always Artichoke Marker to color in the stems and leaves.

17)  Adhere the stamped faux mother-of-pearl rectangle to the punched Always Artichoke rectangle.

18)  Adhere the rectangles to the stamped Pink Pirouette rectangle.

19)  Adhere a piece of Always Artichoke 1/2" Seam Binding Ribbon to the bottom of the pink rectangle.

20)  Tie a small piece of ribbon to the first piece of ribbon and trim ends.

21)  Cut a piece of Always Artichoke Card Stock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2".  Score and fold in half to make a card.

22)  Adhere the pink rectangle to the front of the card.

Tips

If you don't want to use Cellophane Bags, you can pour the Shimmer Paint into the lid of an empty accessories container (like the kind that holds buttons or brads) instead.  You can also crumple a plain piece of plastic wrap from your kitchen to pounce the paint onto the card stock.

I like to cut my Stamping Sponges into quarters.  This makes them easier to handle and gives you more surfaces to ink up!

You'll need to use StazOn Ink to stamp images on your faux mother-of-pearl pieces so that the Shimmer Paint does not resist the ink and leave gaps in your image.

If you use Clear-Mount Stamps, be careful using StazOn Cleaner to clean them.  The StazOn Cleaner can interfere with the static cling properties that hold the Clear-Mount Stamps on the Clear-Mount Blocks.  I just try to clean Clear-Mount Stamps that I've used with StazOn immediately using my Stampin' Mist and Stampin' Scrub.

You can crumple the Seam Binding Ribbon before adding it to your projects to make it look more aged and antique.

Forever Tree

We are focusing on watercoloring in my Club Classes this month, so I'm starting to design the cards for those classes.  One of the techniques I was playing with was the "Blurred Vision Watercoloring" used on this card.  I like the way this card turned out, but won't be able to do it in my Club Classes because I don't have enough of the ribbon for everyone!  Time to order more!  This card also fits the Mojo Monday 182 Sketch (MOJO182).  Enjoy!

Directions

1)  Punch a 2-1/2" Circle from a scrap of Very Vanilla Card Stock using the 2-1/2" Circle Punch.

2)  Ink up the flower image from the Bliss Set using Baja Breeze Ink.  Stamp off on scratch paper before stamping on the circle.  Repeat randomly all over the circle remembering to stamp off each time.

3)  Ink up the sentiment from the Word Play Set using Soft Suede Ink.  Stamp onto a scrap of white tissue paper.

4)  Ink up the bird image from the Bliss Set using Baja Breeze Ink.  Stamp on the tissue paper so it looks like the bird is standing on the word "imagine."  Set the tissue paper aside to dry.

5)  Cut a 3" Circle from a scrap of Soft Suede Card Stock using the Big Shot and 3" Circle Die.

6)  Ink up the top flourish only of the large flourish stamp from the Bliss Set using the Soft Suede Marker.  Stamp the flourish around the edge of the suede circle.  Remember to re-ink the stamp each time with the Marker's brush tip.  Clean the stamp when done.

7)  Cut a piece of Baja Breeze Card Stock to 4 1/4 x 5 1/2".  Cut the rectangle in half along the diagonal.

8)  Stamp the word "Bliss" from the Bliss Set in Baja Breeze Ink in the lower right corner of the triangle.

9)  Stamp the entire flourish from the Bliss Set in Baja Breeze Ink just above the word at an angle.

10)  Use the Scallop Trim Border Punch to punch the long straight diagonal edge of the triangle.

11)  Cut a piece of the Crumb Cake with vanilla swirls paper from the Elegant Soiree Designer Paper to 3 7/8 x 5 1/8".

12)  Adhere the stamped triangle of Baja Breeze Card Stock to the designer paper and trim off any excess at the corners.

13)  Cut a piece of Soft Suede Card Stock to 4 x 5 1/4".

14)  Adhere the designer paper/card stock rectangle to the suede rectangle.

15)  Cut a piece of the scale pattern paper from the Elegant Soiree Designer Paper to 1 1/4 x 4 1/2".

16)  Adhere the strip of designer paper to the left side of the large rectangle so there is about 1/4" between the edge of the strip and the edge of the larger piece of designer paper.

17)  Cut a strip of Baja Breeze Card Stock to 1 x 3 1/2".

18)  Punch one long edge of the strip with the Scallop Trim Border Punch.

19)  Trim the strip so it is only about 7/16" wide and about 2 11/16" long with it ending just on either side of a scallop.

20)  Adhere the punched strip to the edge of the designer paper strip so the scallops poke out along the left edge and there is about 1" below the strip to the bottom of the designer strip.

21)  Lay the paper-piercing template from the Mat Pack on top of the Baja Breeze strip so a line of holes runs right down the center of the solid portion.

22)  Use the Paper-Piercing Tool to poke a hole in every other hole up the length of the baja strip.  Remember to use the sponge mat and hard mat under the card stock to protect your work surface.

23)  Thread a needle with a lenght of Linen Thread.  Sew down the length of the strip by pushing the needle through the holes you already poked.

24)  Secure the top portion of the thread to the back side of the card stock.  Tie a knot in the loose end at the bottom and trim off excess.

25)  Cut a piece of Baja Breeze Card Stock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2".  Score and fold in half to make a card.

26)  Adhere the rectangle of card stock and designer paper to the front of the card.

27)  Wrinkle up the stamped tissue paper and then carefully smooth it back out.

28)  Coat the entire front of the stamped vanilla circle with the Glue Stick.

29)  Adhere the tissue paper to the circle smoothing the wrinkles slightly as you go.

30)  Trim off excess tissue paper.

31)  Adhere the tissue paper covered circle to the stamped Soft Suede circle and then to the card front.

32)  Tie a bow with a piece of Baja Breeze Seam Binding Ribbon and trim ends.

33)  Tie a piece of Linen Thread through the top of a Trinket Key and then around the center of the bow.  Trim off excess.

34)  Adhere the bow and key to the card front using Mini Glue Dots.

Tips

If you don't have the 2-1/2" Circle Punch, you can cut a circle of that size using the Circle Scissor Plus (page 199, $29.95) and Glass Mat (page 199, $19.95) or you can cut one of that size using the Big Shot and Circles #2 Originals Die (page 213, $15.95).

It's easier to line things up if you use Clear-Mount Stamps as you can see through the Clear-Mount Blocks.  However, you can always use a Stamp-a-ma-jig (page 198, $11.95) to get things perfectly lined up and straight.

Use a Marker to ink up a small portion of the flourish stamp so you don't get a mish-mash of stamped lines.

It's easier to punch the small strip of Baja Breeze Card Stock if you start with a piece of card stock bigger than you want your finished piece to be.  After punching, you can trim it to the correct size.

The tissue paper will give you a muted, soft image with a soft, smooth texture.  The wrinkles make it look like a piece of old silk.
